The 24-year-old has been in red-hot form in the World Cup sprint races in particular this season with four out of her five wins before the trip to Norway coming in the discipline.

And Neuner comfortably made it five from six in the 7.5km sprint - the first of six events in Holmenkollen - shooting perfectly in the range to cross the finishing line in 20:41.9minutes.

The victory helps the German maintain her lead in the World Cup rankings over Darya Domracheva, who, sitting in second place overall, finished second – 38.2 seconds behind Neuner.

Domracheva clocked 21:20.1 after one penalty in the range with home hope, Norway’s Tora Berger, completing the podium in third with a time of 21:30.8.

Neuner’s lead at the top of the overall World Cup standings now stands at 63 points from 57 with the German totalling 756 to Belarusian Domracheva’s 693.

Meanwhile, Berger’s third-place finish moves her up to third overall with 608 point ahead of Finland’s Kaisa Makarainen, who could only manage ninth on the day after three penalties.
