Home favourites Owen Wright (17.93) and Joel Parkinson (17.27) both put in excellent opening performances while Kelly Slater (13.70) and Jordy Smith (15.60) also eased through to round three.
But Taj Burrow was off-colour in his heat, managing a mere 11.10 while being out-surfed by Nic Muscroft and Kolohe Andino in clean three-to-four foot waves.
Brazil's Adriano De Souza notched an impressive 16.00 while Mick Fanning progressed from his heat with a 14.76.
In the women's competition, world title leader Stephanie Gilmore will have to fight her way through an elimination round after a disappointing opening day.
Gilmore, the four-times world champion, lost her first heat in Victoria and will now have to make her way out of an extra round.
The three-times Bells champion was out-manoeuvred by Lakey Peterson despite both surfers ending on the same combined wave score of 14.17.
"I don't think I've ever had a count back before but it was a good heat," Gilmore said.
"We had a lot of waves and the girls (Peterson and Nikki Van Dijk) were putting the pressure on and were a little bit hassling.
"All the things you don't want when you're trying to win a heat.
"Lakey is really tough."
Meanwhile, defending champion Sally Fitzgibbons, Laura Enever and Tyler Wright had no problems in moving directly into the third round.
Fitzgibbons was the day's standout performer, winning a combined wave score of 18.84 out of the 20 available to roar a title warning to her rivals.
