Tottenham Hotspur Fan View: Bring on the Swans

The ceremony of players signing extended contracts has become big business at Tottenham. It’s almost as if they’re trying to distract us from the general mess they’ve made in the transfer market in recent years. What’s that, Spurs blew £50m on rubbish this summer? BANG! Here’s Harry Winks putting another four years on his contract.

I’m on to you, Tottenham. I’m on to you.

The latest young buck to be anchored down to a lucrative new deal— and it’s genuinely an important one —is Harry Kane. The England striker is reportedly to be paid a club-record-breaking £120k a week until 2022.

The timing was perfect, of course. The news broke on the same day that several tabloids were claiming that Spurs and Kane were at loggerheads; with the Big Clubs circling, just waiting for the slightest whiff of potential turbulence.

What little doubt remained was neatly baseball-batted over the hedges, when Kane revealed there was little question of him doing anything other than squiggle his moniker on the dotted line:

“Everyone knows how much I love this team and how I feel about this club and to sign another contract is a special feeling,” Kane told the offical Tottenham website.

The first task of Harry’s new role as handsomely-paid super striker, is to wallop in a goal or two against a rotten Swansea side. It’s really the least he could do.

Bob Bradley will be encouraged by his team’s resolve in coming back to beat Pardew’s hilariously bad Palace last week, in that 5-4 barnstormer at the Liberty Stadium. Less cheered, perhaps, about the turn of events which saw his side concede 4 goals at home to a hilariously bad Palace. You can see the problem.

For Tottenham the chief threat will be Gylfi Sigurdsson and his fiendishly decent set-piece delivery, which Spurs fans didn’t really get a chance to experience first-hand. The Icelander’s time at Spurs coincided with Gareth Bale’s ascension to Superherodom; whose one of numerous special powers was being a crack shot from dead balls.

Mauricio Pochettino admitted himself this week that it might’ve been an error of judgement to sell the talented Scandinavian:

“Every time we meet him and see him he shows his quality, not only as a player but like a man. All the people here talk very highly about him. It’s a shame but sometimes in football you never know what will happen in the future.”

Team news and Toby Alderweireld is in line to make a long-awaited return (feels like we’ve been saying that for weeks) but no kidding, mister. He’s fit for real this time:

“Toby has been training with the team and we need to assess him tomorrow to see if he’s ready or not. It will be difficult but he’s very close.“

Well, maybe.

Totttenham need a win or the natives might start revolting.
