When Iceland defeated England in the last 16 of Euro 2016, it marked one of the most famous days in its footballing history, and one doctor has spotted a clue as to how the country might have celebrated.

Asgeir Petur Thorvaldsson, a resident doctor in the anaesthesiology department of Landspitali University Hospital, Reykjavik, tweeted that his maternity ward had administered unprecedented levels of pain relief over the weekend – coincidentally nine months exactly since Iceland's 2-1 victory over England.

Roughly translated, Thorvaldsson tweeted: "Set a record for the number of epidurals in the maternity duty this weekend."

Iceland's major tournament debut was a roaring success last summer, as they ran all the way to the quarter-finals before exiting to hosts and eventual runners-up France.

Having drawn 1-1 with subsequent tournament winners Portugal in their opening game, Cristiano Ronaldo accused Iceland of having a "small mentality" that ensured "they are not going to do anything in the competition". But he was wrong.

Iceland's most glorious moment was the defeat of England in the first knockout round, while their fans provided one of the signature sounds of the tournament – the 'Thunderclap' celebration.

Iceland's star name, Gylfi Sigurdsson, has already said that Iceland's youngsters are better than his generation. And if the new anecdotal evidence is to be believed, future national teams might have quite a few more players to choose from.
