Chelsea co-sporting director Lawrence Stewart has acknowledged that there were doubts about the future of Levi Colwill at the club last year amid reported interest from Liverpool. The defender has been the subject of significant speculation over recent seasons, with the Reds one of multiple clubs reputedly keen.

Colwill, 21, spent consecutive campaigns on loan at Huddersfield Town in the Championship and then at Premier League level with Brighton and Hove Albion before breaking into the Blues first team. The Seagulls even reportedly saw a £30million bid rejected last summer.

However, he signed a six-year contract last year and finally made his Chelsea debut against Liverpool on the opening day of last season. Colwill is now a firm first-team regular.

He split his time between central defence and left-back last term, making 32 appearances across all competitions. But since the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, centre-back has been his position for new head coach Enzo Maresca, and he has played every minute of their Premier League matches to date.

Stewart has now highlighted Colwill's development over the last 18 months. "There was a little bit of a question mark about Levi's future when [fellow co-sporting director Paul Winstanley and I] arrived and what that might be," Stewart told The Telegraph.

"So, obviously, we're delighted that he's here and he's playing and developing." Stewart acknowledged that they expect him to continue with the same "approach and mentality," and it appears the player is firmly in the club's plans.
