Blake Griffin undergoes surgery on left knee, no timetable for return
Detroit Pistons big man Blake Griffin is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery on his left knee.
The 30-year-old Griffin was limited to just 18 games this season due to the issue. Griffin still averaged 15.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game despite the injury.
Griffin had a procedure on the same knee during the offseason. He missed the start of the season while recovering from that surgery. The Pistons were careful with Griffin’s workload when he was available, giving him off days as needed so he could rest his knee.
After playing in the Pistons’ Dec. 28 game against the San Antonio Spurs, Griffin has missed the past four games with knee pain. Griffin was expected to meet with a specialist in early January to discuss the possibility of having season-ending surgery, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. It appears Griffin decided to go through with that surgery.
With Griffin limited, the Pistons have struggled to build on last season’s playoff appearance. Through 37 games, the team sits at 13-24.
Griffin still has two years and a little over $75 million left on the five-year, $171 million deal he signed with the Pistons following the 2016-17 season.
