Bobby Orr assists Milt Schmidt, 98, for unforgettable Bruins’ puck drop (Video)

Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr is considered one of the greatest players in NHL history. But he concedes that Milt Schmidt, who played 776 games for Boston from 1936-55, is in fact that greatest Bruin ever.

“I would go with that, yes. I would go with you Milty that you’re the greatest Bruin ever,” said Orr before the team’s 2016-17 home opener on Thursday night against the New Jersey Devils.

Schmidt, 98 years old and seated in his wheelchair, responded thusly: “You’ve got to say that, because you’re right beside me.”

And there was much laughter.

Orr then had the honor of pushing ‘the greatest Bruin ever’ out to center ice for the ceremonial puck drop, and it was quite a moment: Orr wearing a yellow Bruins sweater with No. 4 on it, and Schmidt waving to the crowd in his No. 15 jersey.

Orr guided Schmidt’s hands down towards the ice, and the Bruins’ great dropped the puck down as the crowd roared.

Captains Andy Greene of the Devils and Zdeno Chara of the Bruins shook his hand, and with that Orr pushed his friend and fellow Hall of Famer back off the ice.

Amazing moment, and a stirring way to connect the past with the present in Boston.
