But the Swiss driver and brakeman Alex Baumann couldn't have won by a narrower margin over two runs in Germany.
The 35-year old driver, a three-time Olympic bronze medallist, edged out Russia's Alexander Zubkov and Alexey Voedova by just one hundredth of a second. Americans Cory Butner and Charles Berkeley completed the podium.
However, there was major disappointment for Britain's top driver John Jackson.
Jackson had a horror start with brakeman Bruce Tasker and made several driving errors, finishing last of the 27 starters and failing to qualify for the second run.
British team-mates Lamin Deen and John Baines didn't fare much better ranking 26th.
Jackson will now look to rebound in the four-man event - his principle target for Sochi - after a silver medal in his last outing in Lake Placid, Britain's first men's World Cup podium for 16 years.
