Aidy Boothroyd insists that every Northampton player is on trial as the Cobblers boss figures out who he believes will help lead the club away from the bottom of League Two.

Boothroyd, who took charge at Sixfields on November 30, deemed Ashley Westwood, Chris Arthur and Bas Savage surplus to requirements after releasing the three players during his first fortnight at the helm. Nick McKoy and Paul Turnbull were recalled to the side against Oxford after both failed to feature in Boothroyd's first game against Crewe.

Boothroyd told the Northampton Chronicle: "Every player is on trial, and every player has to show me, the fans, and everybody connected with the club that, one, they want to be here and, two, they are willing to go the extra mile to be in the team."

He added: "It's too early for me to be saying 'he's going to be here' and 'he's not going to be here' but there are three who have already left the club so I won't be slow in making decisions.

"However, at the same time I'll make sure I'll give everybody the opportunity to be part of the future here at Northampton. But I'm not a charity, I'll pick teams that I think can win games as we've got to get points."
