With a second national lockdown far from ruled out to deal with rising coronavirus cases, Boris Johnson’s handling of the pandemic is once again under the spotlight.

The prime minister said on Wednesday said that “there is only one way of doing this” as he warned that tougher measures could be implemented “no matter how impatient, how fed up we may become”.

But Johnson’s critics argue that the decisions he has made so far may have made the coronavirus crisis even worse than it should have been.

Coronavirus deaths in the UK currently stand at 42,233, according to Johns Hopkins – the fifth highest total in the world – while positive tests are on the rise.

Some blame the rise on government measures such as the 10pm curfew for pubs and restaurants, which has seen some crowding onto the streets once the doors were closed.

The rule of six and the test and trace system have also come under fire, the latter of which Johnson promised would be “world beating”.

However, other measures for workers – including the furlough scheme, grants for the self-employed and bounce back loans have received praise.
