Boston College athletic director Brad Bates will step down from his post in June to become vice president of a collegiate search and consulting firm.

Bates, who had been at BC since 2012, will join Collegiate Sports Associates (CSA) out of Chapel Hill, N.C., the school announced Monday.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Boston College and am especially grateful for the opportunity to serve the University,” Bates said in a release. “I will forever be an Eagle and a fan of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, and will cherish the great relationships that I have made here. The Jesuit, Catholic education offered at BC is distinctive in higher education and epitomizes the very best of college athletics. I feel privileged to be a part of this community.”

Bates, whose status at BC was a source of discussion throughout the industry this past fall, hired both head coaches of the Eagles’ revenue-producing sports, landing football coach Steve Addazio from Temple after the 2012 season and hiring men’s basketball coach Jim Christian from Ohio after the 2014 season. While both programs suffered win-less ACC seasons in the 2015-16 academic year, the football team bounced back this past fall with a 7-6 record and Quick Lane Bowl win, despite going just 2-6 in ACC play. The hoops team, at 2-12 in league play, currently sits in last place in the conference, although it has had its memorable moments this season in beating old rivals Providence and Syracuse by double-digits in back-to-back contests.

BC announced a national search for Bates’ replacement, and the school said it will use an executive search firm.

“Brad is a man of great integrity and has been a tremendous ambassador for Boston College and its Athletics program,” school president William P. Leahy, S.J., said in a release. “CSA is fortunate to have him join its team.”
