Bournemouth interim manager Gary O’Neil has turned down interest from Luton Town in becoming the club’s new manager, TEAMtalk can reveal.

Luton are searching for a new manager to replace Nathan Jones following his move to the Premier League with Southampton last week.

The Hatters have sounded out O’Neil about taking over from Jones at Kenilworth Road. But O’Neil, whose own future at Bournemouth is uncertain, has ruled himself out of the running for the role at Luton.

Bournemouth are weighing up bringing in former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa as a permanent successor to Scott Parker after holding talks with the Argentine and his arrival would spell the end of O’Neil’s tenure in charge of first-team affairs.

O’Neil has been in interim charge of Bournemouth since the end of August following the sacking of Parker.

Parker had led Bournemouth to promotion to the Premier League, but lost his job soon into their first season back in the top flight. It prompted the club to put O’Neil in charge for the time being.

Gary O’Neil has made good impression with Bournemouth

The former Portsmouth midfielder has impressed during his stint in charge of the Cherries, having gone unbeaten in his first six matches and they are currently in 14th spot in the Premier League table, following Saturday’s impressive 3-0 win over Everton.

It was their second win over Everton in the space of a few days after also knocking them out of the Carabao Cup.

It also ensured that O’Neil’s side went into the World Cup break above the Toffees – and five other opponents – in the table. Bournemouth are three points above the relegation zone at present, with Nottingham Forest occupying 18th spot.

O’Neil, 39, has admitted Bielsa would be a good appointment for Bournemouth. Only time will tell where he ends up himself after any such decision has been made, but it shouldn’t be Luton.

Luton are currently 10th in the Championship table after winning seven of their first 21 games in the competition this season. Jones had been in charge of them, for his second spell, since 2020.
