Box Office: ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ Targeting $15 Million Extended Debut

Lionsgate’s “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” is heading toward a $10 million weekend debut at the domestic box office, with an expected gross of $15 million in its first five days of release.

The sequel to 2017’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” which opened on Wednesday, took in $3 million from 3,331 locations on Friday. This puts the film on track with previous estimates, which predicted the movie would make a solid $15 million through Sunday. As this weekend’s only new nationwide release, there isn’t too much competition for the action comedy, which stars Salma Hayek, Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson.

Meanwhile, box office mainstay “A Quiet Place Part II” is expected to come in at No. 2, adding another $8 million to its haul. This would bring the silent thriller’s total up to $124.5 million, the highest domestic gross of any film in the pandemic era. It earned $2.6 million from 3,166 theaters on Friday, and is expected to bring in similar numbers all weekend.

“Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” hopped up to the third spot in this weekend’s box office charts, with experts estimating the family film to bring in another $5.7 to 6.2 million. Starring James Corden as the titular rabbit, “Peter Rabbit 2” gathered $1.86 million on Friday from 3,346 locations.

Coming in at No. 4 in this weekend’s predictions is Disney’s “Cruella,” which took in $1.4 million from 3,110 locations on Friday, heading toward a 3-day estimate of $4.8 million. If the expectations ring true, “Cruella’s” total will rise to $64.4 million. “Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” rounds out the top five, with experts predicting the horror film to bring in another $4.7 million, bringing its cume to $53.2 million.

“In the Heights,” which opened last weekend to a disappointing $11 million, falls at No. 6 on this weekend’s charts. The movie musical is estimated to take in another $4.3 million, bringing it’s total earnings up to $19.8 million.
