The contest was brought to a premature end as the Welshman was unable to continue further than the fifth round – his trainer, Gary Lockett, throwing in the towel with Maccarinelli’s right eye closed shut.

The 33-year-old’s problems started as early as the first round as the two fightesrs clashed heads, and, despite Brahmer also suffering a gash to the eye, it was Maccarineli that came off worse.

The reigning light-heavyweight champion, who had lost just two of his 45 previous contests ahead of the bout, targeted his opponent’s obvious ailment, using his effective left jab to increase the damage.

The Welshman was almost unable to return for the third round, but he showed typical steely grit to press on and take it to Brahmer.

However, a devastating combination of hooks, jabs and uppercuts in the fourth round proved too much for Maccarinelli, with the swelling increasing around that right eye.

The challenger was able to continue for just one more round before trainer Lockett pulled his fighter from the contest, meaning that the German retained his title in some style.
