Kessler took Froch's title and inflicted the Nottingham boxer's first professional defeat via a controversial points decision in a bout that was a contender for the 2010 Fight of the Year.

Following the defeat in Herning, Froch reclaimed and retained his vacant WBC super-middleweight title before losing it to Andre Ward. However he claimed the IBF belt against Lucian Bute last year and retained it with a third round knockout of Yusaf Mack in December.

Meanwhile Kessler took a 14-month break after beating Froch due to an eye injury but has beaten Mehdi Bouadla, Allan Green and Brian Magee on his return to take his professional record to 46 wins and two losses.

"Our first fight was pure warfare. We went at each other for every minute of every round and the rematch promises to be even more fiercely contested. I seriously wish I was ringside myself for this fight, because I'm gunning for revenge at all costs and the fight fans are in for a real treat,” said Froch when the fight was confirmed last month.

A stadium venue such as Nottingham Forest’s City Ground had been mooted but the fight will go to the capital instead.
