Boxing - Herbie Hide jail term reduced

Former WBO heavyweight champion Herbie Hide’s 22 month prison sentence for conspiring to sell cocaine has been reduced by four months after appeal.

Hide, 42, was sent down at Cambridge Crown Court in November, but three appeal judges cut the term to 18 months after Hide’s legal representatives argued that the original sentence was too long.

Hide fell for a tabloid sting operation set up by ‘Fake Sheikh’ Mazher Mahmood, who now plies his trade at the Sunday Times after a long association with the shamed, defunct News of the World. Lawyers for Hide questioned the use of 'entrapment' tactics.

According to the records, the quality of the cocaine obtained by the reporters was ‘absolute rubbish’. Hide has previous convictions for criminal damage, battery, threatening behaviour and carrying a knife.
