The 12-round contest was a mostly-cautious affair, but the champion dominated the final three rounds, drawing blood from the nose of Ruiz in the process.

It was enough to compel scorecards of 116-113 and 115-113 in favour of the Japanese title-holder from two of the ringside judges, with the third deeming Ruiz ahead by 117-113.

Kameda defeated Venezuelan Alexander Munoz in December 2010 to win the vacant belt, and made his fifth successful title defence in what was a close bout which very easily could have seen the three judges award the belt to Ruiz.
