WBA bantamweight champion Koki Kameda (L) of Japan lands his left straight on challenger John Mark Apolinario of Philippines at a title bout in Tokyo (AFP)

Southpaw Kameda (31-1, 17 KOs) was in control from the opening round, stalking Apolinario (17-3-3, 4 KOs) around the ring and hurting him with his dangerous left.

As time wore on it seemed a question of whether Kameda would win the fight inside the distance or on the cards – and he went for the former.

He decked Apolinario in round 10 with a right hook on the counter, only for the Filipino to recover immediately.

Apolinario went on the attack, with little success, and found himself on the canvas again in the 12th round.

However he would survive to take the bout to the judges – and Kameda was awarded a unanimous decision 119-107, 118-108, 117-109.
