Boxing - Khan’s speed edging out Maidana’s power in Mayweather poll

Amir Khan has taken the lead over former foe Marcos Maidana in an online poll conducted by Floyd Mayweather to ‘let the fans’ decide his next opponent.

On Wednesday, this certainly wasn’t the case. Gareth A Davies of the Telegraph reported that Maidana was winning hands down with 80 per cent of the vote. Various other websites reported that Khan would be trounced in the poll.

It’s expected that Mayweather will fight on May 3rd in Las Vegas. As of lunchtime on Saturday, Khan had 54 per cent of the votes - a lead of more than 2,600 over the Argentinian, who captured the WBA welterweight title in December with a resounding display against previously unbeaten Adrien Broner.

Perhaps Khan’s most entertaining fight was his 2010 meeting with Maidana, who was put down in the first, but got himself right back into the fight and delivered a brutal tenth round assault on Khan which had the Bolton fighter falling around the ring.

Khan hasn’t fought since his Sheffield appearance against Julio Diaz back in April, which he won narrowly on points after bering put down in the fourth round. he is yet to compete at welterweight, having held titles at lightweight and light welter.
