The 25-year-old Colchester boxer (record: 16-3-1 with nine KOs) was set to continue his quest for an eventual world title challenge at the expense of Jones, who was defeated by Kell Brook via majority decision in July.

But after falling ill at the end of last week, ‘Lights Out’ has not been able to recover or train enough to remain in sufficient condition for the bout.

‘I’m absolutely gutted that I can’t fight. Hopefully we get it on early next year,’ Purdy said.

Darren Barker’s return to middleweight action against Kerry Hope has now been promoted to the headliner on the ‘Christmas Cracker’ card.

Barker (23-1) has not fought since losing his world title challenge – and unbeaten record – to Sergio Martinez in October 2011 in Atlantic City thanks to a series of injuries.

Martinez has also defeated Matthew Macklin earlier this year, and defends his WBC title against Martin Murray in Argentina next April.

Hope, meanwhile, won and lost the European belt to Grzegorz Proksa in consecutive bouts this year and the Welshman has a record reading 18-4 with just one career knockout, following his return to winning ways on the Carl Froch undercard with a points victory over Norbert Szekeres.
