Boxing - Macklin: 'I'm the more proven entity'

Matthew Macklin (29-4) is adamant that he's the more proven entity when he takes his third shot at a World title next weekend against explosive Kazakh, Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (26-0).

Macklin: "I'm the more proven entity"

Making the seventh defence of his belt, it could be argued that WBA champion Golovkin is the hardest hitting middleweight around. Only three of his 26 opponents thus far have seen the final bell, and his stock in the US is rising because of this.

K2 Promotion's Tom Leoffler realises that it's time for Golovkin to step up: "Gennady needs to fight a top fighter, maybe the best non-title holder in the division. This fight will provide fireworks, and it will show if Gennady is the real deal."

Since May 1st, trainer Able Sanchez has been subjecting Golovkin to the high altitude of Big Bear Lake, California in his state-of-the-art gym. He comes into the fight a heavy favourite, but as Macklin points out, Golovkin hasn't mixed in the same company as him.

"I remember him from the World Junior championships is Budapest 13 years earlier. He's looked impressive, but he hasn't really beaten anybody of any note. Most of the guys he's been walking through are 154 pounders. I'm a strong 160 pounder, and I'll have plenty for him.

"I'm the more proven entity and I've faced much tougher opposition. I gave Sergio (Martinez) a good fight. I came up short, but I'm a better fighter now for it. Stylistically, Sergio was a nightmare. As good as Gennaday is, he's gonna be there in front of you."

Macklin feels he should have already been a world champion:

"I should have been WBA champion on the last Saturday of June two years ago against Sturm but I was robbed in Germany. Maybe it's third time lucky."

"See you all in Foxwoods."
