Undefeated Bulgarian Pulev took scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 118-110 from the judges to earn mandatory challenger status at the expense of Thompson, who has lost to Klitschko twice previously and put himself into contention for a possible third shot by dropping Britain’s David Price twice.

Elsewhere on the card from Schwerin, Germany, Juergen Braehmer comfortably retained his European light-heavyweight title via points against Italian Stefan Abatangelo with scorecards of 115-111, 119-108 and 119-108.

And former world super-middleweight champion Arthur Abraham was unconvincing in a 116-113, 116-112, 117-111 win over unknown Namibian Willbeforce Shihepo.
