The much-hyped 24-year-old is a protégé of infamous promoter Don King, who now after seeing both Santana and Tavoris Cloud defeated in recent weeks, sees his stock within the industry continue to plummet.

The 25-year-old Uzbekistani stood in for Carlos Cardenas following the Venezuelan’s withdrawal from the fight and knocked Santana down three times before the fight was called off in round nine.

The victory at the Treasure Island Casino earned Mamadjonov, who currently resides in Houston, Texas, the vacant WBA international lightweight title and improves his record to 13-1 with nine knockouts.

The Miami-based Santana, meanwhile, suffers his first professional defeat in his 15th outing having stopped 11 of his previous 14 opponents.
