BOYS BASKETBALL: Cardinals' pick-your-poison style too much for Oologah

Jan. 25—It is any basketball team's wish to have players attacking from different spots on the floor, and Verdigris accomplished that Tuesday night.

Four players scored in double figures as the Cardinals transformed into a pick-your-poison brand of basketball in defeating Rogers County rival Oologah 68-48 at Verdigris Activity Center. Tyler Willis, Maddox Mason and Dax Hamilton each scored 16 points, while Coy Lemons dropped 13.

The Mustangs held their own early, trailing 13-11 after one quarter despite Hamilton drilling three 3-pointers and two field goals from Willis, but it was only a matter of time until Verdigris really flexed its offensive muscles.

Mason, who was scoreless in the first period, went off for seven of his 16 points in the second, and that effort paired with 3-balls from Hamilton and Lemons allowed the Cardinals to outscore Oologah 17-6 and take a 30-17 lead into halftime.

The Verdigris offense didn't slow down in the second half, with Lemons knocking down three 3-pointers and Mason adding five points as part of the Cardinals' 21-point third quarter. Verdigris needed every one of those points, for the Mustangs found some offense themselves with 18 points behind six scoring contributors.

Oologah didn't give up there, though, hitting four 3-pointers in the fourth, including two from E. Hadley and one from both Lane Brown and Jaden Henry. The Mustangs made only one 3-ball through the first three quarters.

Despite that sudden hot streak from long range, the Cardinals didn't falter. Willis scored seven of his 16 points in the fourth, and Austin Boren and Mason added four points apiece to help secure the victory as part of a 17-point quarter. Boren finished with seven points.

Hadley and Eli DeSpain led Oologah with 12 points apiece, though the latter was held scoreless in the fourth. Henry had a notable outing as well with eight points, half of which came in the final period.

With the triumph, Verdigris extended its winning streak to two games and improved to 6-11 overall. Meanwhile, the Mustangs' three-game winning streak came to an end as they moved to an 11-6 record.
