Details about the upcoming Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt have been revealed, with the Hollywood star set to drive a formula car at Silverstone as filming begins.

Joseph Kosinski, director of the Tom Cruise-smash sequel Top Gun: Maverick has begun work on a new project – a Formula 1 movie which will star Brad Pitt.

Details of the upcoming movie have been shared at an event leading up to this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix, with Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer joining F1 broadcaster Will Buxton for a panel session at the F1 Accelerate summit, which was organised and hosted by the Wall Street Journal.

Buxton took to Twitter to relay some information revealed at the closed-doors event, revealing that Pitt will be driving a custom F2 or F3-type car in the not-too-distant future – the two-time Academy Award winner will be on track during private sessions at the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone in order to carry out some of the on-track filming.

“What an honour to host the final panel of the day at F1 Accelerate with movie royalty Jerry Bruckheimer and Joseph Kosinski,” Buxton wrote.

“Their F1 movie sounds incredible. They’re creating an 11th team and filming on track and on event from Silverstone to the end of the year.

“They’ve spent 18 months taking what they learnt on Top Gun: Maverick to develop the smallest moveable 6k camera ever designed to take the viewer into the cockpit. A cockpit in which their stars will actually drive. That’s right. Brad Pitt driving an F1 (sic) car from Silverstone onwards.”

The ‘F1 car’ that Pitt will drive has been designed by Mercedes, and has already begun track testing, as are the film’s actors – both in the sim and in reality.

“Lewis Hamilton is in daily communication and is advising on storyline and script to ensure it’s the most accurate racing film ever made,” Buxton continued.

“Joseph [Kosinki] says Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix (from 1966 – editor) is his biggest touchstone.

“Both he and Jerry are determined to make the most accurate, most impressive race movie anyone has ever seen. Oh. And Tom Cruise has already offered to do some extra driving if they need him.”

The film, which Hamilton’s newly-created Dawn Apollo Films are producing, is currently untitled, but the plot has been outlined.

According to IMDB, Pitt will star as an F1 driver who “comes out of retirement to mentor and team with a younger driver”.

Speaking about the project, Hamilton has said: “I have such high hopes for it. I know we’re going to make the best racing movie that’s ever existed, both visually, and we’re going to work on making sure we pull on the heartstrings of all those fans.”
