Bayer Leverkusen have signed Aston Villa's Emi Buendia on loan with an option to buy.

The 28-year-old midfielder has signed a one-year contract extension with Villa before joining Leverkusen for the remainder of the campaign. Buendia's new deal with Villa will see him contracted at the club until 2027, though he could depart in the summer on a permanent basis if Leverkusen take up their chance to sign him.

The option for Leverkusen to buy Buendia is thought to be worth around £17m. He had interest across Europe, including elsewhere in Germany and in Italy, as well as Saudi Arabia.

Buendia has been used sparingly by Unai Emery this season, starting only three games in all competitions. He played from the off in Carabao Cup games against Wycombe Wanderers and Crystal Palace before starting against AS Monaco in the Champions League last week.

Buendia has made a total of 20 appearances this season, but only twice has he been called off the bench for more than 10 minutes in a league game.

He missed the whole of the last campaign after suffering an ACL injury on the eve of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. Leeds United were one of several clubs interested in taking Buendia on loan for this season, but Villa and the player rebuffed their approach.

Buendia joined Villa for £33m from Norwich City in the summer of 2021. He was one of three players signed to replace Jack Grealish, who left for Manchester City for £100m.
