Luke Donald has been confirmed as European captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome after Henrik Stenson was stripped of the role.

Stenson was due to lead Europe at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club next September, but the Swede had the captaincy taken off him after he joined LIV Golf last month.

Donald emerged as the favourite to step up and replace him and the Englishman was on Monday confirmed as skipper.

The former world number one never finished on the losing side in the four Ryder Cups he played in, winning 10.5 points won from his 15 matches.

Donald has served as a vice-captain in the past two editions of the prestigious biennial event.

The 44-year-old last week vowed that there is no chance he would go down the same route as Stenson if he landed the captaincy.

"If I got this captaincy, I would live up to my word and see it through," he said. "Let me put it that way. I wouldn't be doing a Henrik."
