Standout 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell suffered broken finger in win over Rams, needs surgery

The San Francisco 49ers got some bad news out of Monday's statement win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Standout rookie running back Elijah Mitchell suffered a broken finger in the game. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Tuesday that Mitchell will undergo surgery on Tuesday to place a pin on the broken bone.

The good news for Mitchell is that the fracture doesn't sound too serious. Shanahan even said that he hopes "he [has] a chance to practice tomorrow" and didn't rule him out for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Mitchell seized top RB spot from 6th round of draft

The second of two running backs the 49ers selected in April's draft, Mitchell — a sixth-round pick — has emerged as San Francisco's primary ball carrier ahead of third-round selection Trey Sermon and the rest of San Francisco's running back depth chart. A true bell-cow, Mitchell handles the majority of carries for the 49ers when available and has tallied 560 yards and three touchdowns on 4.8 yards per carry in seven games. He ran 27 times for 91 yards in Monday's 31-10 win over the Rams.

The 49ers improved to 4-5 with Monday's win, staying in the playoff picture of an NFC race that could conceivably see a team with a losing record secure the conference's seventh playoff berth. A potential game breaker with sub-4.4 40-yard dash speed, Mitchell is an integral part of San Francisco's offensive attack.
