Brendan Rodgers says discussions are underway regarding the future of James Maddison, amid Tottenham and Newcastle aiming to capture the Leicester City man.

Maddison was in great form last term. He found the net 18 times, as well as registering 12 assists, during 53 matches in all competitions.

And the attacking midfielder has begun the new campaign brightly too. He got an assist in Leicester’s Premier League opener against Brentford, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Maddison scored against Arsenal in Leicester’s next game, though the Foxes were brushed aside by Mikel Arteta’s team and lost 4-2 at the Emirates.

Maddison could end up leaving the King Power before the end of the summer transfer window. According to reports, Tottenham hold an interest in signing him.

And Newcastle have made two bids as well. Their first was worth £40million, but this fell well short of the Leicester asking price. As such, Rodgers’ side rejected it.

Newcastle came back with an improved offer, sitting at £50m. This included an initial payment of £45m, plus £5m in add-ons.

As per The Northern Echo, the Magpies are unlikely to submit a third approach for Maddison. They will only do this if Leicester significantly reduce his price tag, which currently sits at £60m.

Brendan Rodgers talks James Maddison future

Rodgers has now given an update on Maddison’s future, prior to the game against Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

He has confirmed the 25-year-old is in talks with Leicester officials over a new contract with the club.

“There are talks for Maddison’s new deal,” Rodgers said (via Fabrizio Romano). “I’m sure the club would want to extend James’ contract. Both sides have to be able to find an agreement.”

Maddison has two years remaining on his current Leicester deal, which is reportedly worth £110,000 a week.

Now is the perfect time for the side to begin negotiations over an extension. Should an agreement be reached, then this will ward off potential suitors Tottenham and Newcastle.

Plus, it will prevent Leicester from having to worry about Maddison going on a free transfer in a couple of years’ time.

Leicester will probably reward Maddison for his loyalty to the club – as he hasn’t put in a transfer request – by offering him a pay rise. Don’t be surprised if this reaches £150k per week.

Rodgers also spoke about Maddison’s team-mate Wesley Fofana, who is a top target for Chelsea. “Fofana is not for sale, the club have made that clear,” the manager said. “Unless anything changes on that I would expect him to be here.”

Leicester fans would love to see Maddison and Fofana remain at the King Power. They are two players integral to Rodgers’ system. And keeping them would be a huge boost in Leicester’s pursuit of a top six place.

Extending Maddison’s contract should be fairly straightforward as he appears happy at the club. Fofana, though, is being enticed by Chelsea and due to this it may be harder to keep him.
