Brentford have confirmed the signing of Mikkel Damsgaard from Sampdoria.

The midfielder has joined in a deal worth around £12.5million, signing a five-year contract.

Bees president Thomas Frank has been in the market for a creative player after seeing Christian Eriksen leave for Manchester United on a free transfer. Damsgaard is one of Eriksen's Denmark team-mates.

The 22-year-old rose to prominence last summer during Euro 2020, prompting a number of transfer links with top European side. However, a move never materalised and Damsgaard went on to suffer an injury-hit season.

"Mikkel is, in my opinion, another classic Brentford signing. He is a young player with big potential to develop further," manager Frank said.

“We think Mikkel can play as one of our ‘eights’ in a 4-3-3 system or as a ‘ten’. He can also play on the wing. We will use him in the way we think we can get the best out of his offensive abilities.

“Importantly, he is a player that will fit into our dressing room. He is a great character, he wants to work hard, he wants to work for the team, and he wants to develop.”

Brentford host Manchester United on Saturday in their second Premier League match of the season, in which Damsgaard could make his debut.
