Brentford vs Tottenham - LIVE!

Tottenham’s quest to qualify for next season’s Champions League took them to an impressive Brentford side today.

Antonio Conte’s side, however, could not find a way past Thomas Frank’s resurgent team and Spurs were lucky not to have fallen behind when Ivan Toney hit the post in the first-half.

The Brentford star then hit the woodwork in the dying embers too, with Spurs far too passive throughout.

With Arsenal beating Manchester United earlier in the day, Conte will be hugely disappointed.

While a point away at one of the Premier League’s form sides isn’t something to be sniffed at, the manner of their performance mirrored their display at home to Brighton last week.

A chance missed and another slow display from a frontline who look short of ideas.

FT: Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

19:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

A point gained for Tottenham on the basis of that performance.

CHANCE FOR TOTTENHAM

19:18 , Jonathan Gorrie

91:00 - Kane tries a scissor kick after a deep cross but it fizzles just wide.

CHANCE FOR BRNETFORD

19:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

90:00 - Toney hits the bar again! Powerful header from a deep free-kick.

Brentford looking more likely

19:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

87:00 - Not much in it but Spurs are barely firing on all cylinders.

19:01 , Jonathan Gorrie

A peculiar change from Conte as Sanchez is on for Sessengon as the first sub. The wing-back hasn’t offered much but it doesn’t seem like the biggest issue for Spurs. Moura would make more sense at this stage.

Dying out

18:58 , Jonathan Gorrie

71:00 - Spurs did manage to get on the ball in more dangerous areas, but it is Brentford who look the most comfortable.

Gam e opening up

18:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

57:00 - Emerson beating too easily and Romero has to cover. Spurs looked exposed.

Jack Rosser from the Brentford Community Stadium

18:43 , Jonathan Gorrie

Tottenham are finally putting Brentford under some pressure here as the Bees block a string of shots from inside the area. Kane is finally starting to find some pockets of space in the box.

Risky from Lloris

18:33 , Jonathan Gorrie

45:00 - Only a few seconds after kick-off, Lloris dawdles on the ball and is almost caught out by Mbeumo.

Back underway!

18:32 , Jonathan Gorrie

Huge improvement needed from Spurs here.

Jack Rosser from the Brentford Community Stadium

18:18 , Jonathan Gorrie

That was a turgid half from Spurs. Brentford have had them on the back foot with their energy at times and kept them out with their impressive defending but the visitors have offered next to nothing in response.

HT: Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

18:18 , Jonathan Gorrie

Far from inspiring stuff from Spurs.

Improvement needed

18:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

44:00 - Arsenal will be enjoying watching this.

Without an improvement, Tottenham do not look likely to close the gap.

Jack Rosser from the Brentford Community Stadium

18:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

Spurs really struggling to cope with Brentford at the moment. For the third time Eriksen finds Toney from a corner and he gets a shot away, this time turned behind off Bentancur.

Eriksen finding space

18:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

36:00 - The Dane’s ball to Toney doesn’t quite work but Eriksen is dropping deep, seeing plenty of the ball.

That could be bad news for Spurs.

Jack Rosser from the Brentford Community Stadium

18:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

Brentford have always been well drilled under Frank but it is always fantastic to watch in person. They are racing forward to cause Spurs problems but are so quick to get back into shape off the ball. Spurs simply can’t find a way through at the moment.

Son stepping forward

18:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

32:00 - Nice change of direction from Spurs opens Brentford up slightly, although Tottenham cannot find the killer final pass.

Slightly better from Spurs

17:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

27:00 - Touch of urgency from Son sees the ball deflected over to Bentancur, who fires high and wide from just outside the box.

Frustration for Tottenham

17:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

24:00 - Really tentative stuff so far from Spurs, with the full-backs offering little and Kane marked out of the game.

CHANCE FOR BRENTFORD

17:52 , Jonathan Gorrie

21:00 - For the second time this afternoon, Eriksen has looked to Toney at the back post from a corner. For the second time, his sweetly-hit volley is blocked.

Jack Rosser from the Brentford Community Stadium

17:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

Thomas Frank will hope Brentford don’t come to rue these missed chances. Toney went close there but it was a real gift from Spurs, allowing the striker a free run to easily beat Emerson to the header. Spurs have seen a bit more of the ball but their play has been slow and stodgy.

CHANCE FOR BRENTFORD

17:47 , Jonathan Gorrie

16:00 - Lloris saves a Toney header from point-blank range after a wonderful corner from Eriksen!

Tottenham yet to get going

17:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

13:00 - Much like against Brighton, Kane cannot find much space.

Yet to come into life

17:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

09:00 - Not full of chances so far but Brentford really are giving Spurs problems with their pressing.

Jack Rosser from the Brentford Community Stadium

17:36 , Jonathan Gorrie

A typically energetic start from Brentford here, not letting Spurs rest and winning a few early corners. Mbuemo and Toney have been a real threat since Eriksen’s arrival and have been given a fair bit of space in the early exchanges.

First chance Brentford

17:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

03:00 - Really aggressive pressing sees the ball drop to Mbemou, although he can’t beat Lloris on the turn.

A touching moment

17:33 , Jonathan Gorrie

Confident Tottenham start

17:32 , Jonathan Gorrie

01:00 - Kane finding space between the lines but his pass to Son sees the South Korean star called offside.

Antonio Conte: Chelsea too good to be dragged into battle for fourth spot

16:20 , Jonathan Gorrie

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte says his former club Chelsea are too good to be dragged into the scrap for the top four, despite their defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday.

The Blues are five points clear of Spurs and Arsenal, and have a game in hand over the north London pair, who meet in N17 next month.

Conte believes Spurs are battling with the Gunners, Manchester United and Wolves for the final Champions League place, and says the team that makes the fewest mistakes will finish fourth.

Rodrigo Bentancur interview: Antonio Conte is intense and always wants 100 per cent - I really like that

16:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

Rodrigo Bentancur has even surprised himself by how quickly he has adapted to life in the Premier League.

The Uruguayan has made an impressive start to his Tottenham career since joining from Juventus in January and, before their slip up against Brighton last weekend, was a key figure in their renaissance under Antonio Conte.

Alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in midfield, Bentancur has become a vital component of Conte’s 3-4-3 system that has lifted Spurs to fourth in the race for the Champions League.

New signings arriving in the Premier League from abroad can often need time to adapt to the physical demands of English football.

But Bentancur has enjoyed a near-seamless introduction, which is no surprise when you hear the work he has put in behind the scenes since moving to London.

The latest on the transfer links between Christian Eriksen and Tottenham

15:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

Thomas Frank hopes Brentford can keep Christian Eriksen beyond the end of this season after his impressive return to the Premier Leagie.

The 30-year-old joined the Bees in January, having left Inter Milan at the end of last year after suffering a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020.

Brentford have won all five matches that Eriksen has started since arriving, including a stunning 4-1 win at Stamford Bridge that saw the Danish midfielder net his first goal for the club.

His contract at Brentford runs until the end of the season, and there have already been reports that Tottenham are keen on bringing Eriksen, who worked with Antonio Conte at Inter, back to north London this summer when he will be a free agent.

Head to head (h2) history and results

15:47 , Jonathan Gorrie

Tottenham wins: 6

Draws: 13

Brentford wins: 24

Prediction

15:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

Brentford have impressed when hosting the biggest sides this season and, for that reason, a draw seems a fair prediction.

1-1 draw.

Tottenham team news: No fresh concerns, changes likely

15:28 , Jonathan Gorrie

Tottenham have no new injury concerns but Matt Doherty, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga remain out.

After Spurs slipped up with a flat display last weekend, Antonio Conte may be tempted to make changes for Saturday’s trip to Brentford.

Brentford team news: Pinnock out

15:23 , Jonathan Gorrie

Brentford defender Ethan Pinnock has been ruled out for several weeks after he sustained a hamstring injury in their win at Watford last weekend.

Mathias Jorgensen will miss the rest of the season, while Sergi Canos and Frank Oyenka are both sidelined.
