Brian Carney believes Sam Burgess is the Super League coach under a 'big bit of pressure' heading into the 2025 season. The Warrington Wolves boss enjoyed a stellar first year in charge of the club, reaching the Challenge Cup final and making the Super League semi-final following a third-place finish.

However, the challenge now is to go one better in 2025 and reach the Grand Final, something that has alluded Warrington since 2018. They are also without a league title since 1955, with next season capping 60 years since their last triumph.

And Carney has stated that an Old Trafford berth has to be the minimum now for Burgess, who begins the season against his younger brother Tom Burgess, who has signed a three-year deal at Huddersfield Giants.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carney said: "I suppose there’s a big bit of pressure on Sam Burgess and Big Spending Warrington. Sam’s in year two, and we know what we got from him in year one.

"He’ll want to go a step better and a step better than last year. It’s probably going to mean a Grand Final appearance at the minimum for Sam Burgess and the Warrington Wolves."

Warrington have signed Oli Leyland from London Broncos and Papua New Guinea back rower Dan Russell from NRL outfit St George Illawarra Dragons). Six players have also left the club: Wesley Bruines (TBC), Joe Bullock (Salford), Josh Drinkwater (TBC), Gil Dudson (Oldham), Matty Nicholson (Canberra Raiders), and Matty Russell (Wakefield). John Bateman has also returned to Wests Tigers following his loan spell.
