Bride slams parents over ‘unfortunate’ reason for skipping her wedding: ‘Incredibly selfish’

A woman wanted to know if she had a good reason to skip her stepdaughter’s wedding.

She took to Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum for answers. The stepmother and father made the difficult decision to not attend the wedding due to a dental surgery unexpectedly scheduled two weeks before.

“We live 5 hours from the venue,” she wrote. “The original plan was for my husband and I to drive there 2 days in advance, stay with them in their little apartment with them and their three kids under 6 (this is important), get the kids ready on the big day, watch them throughout the big day and then babysit them overnight while the couple stays in the hotel. If it sounds like my husband and I are more babysitters than parents of the brides, celebrating her big day, well that’s because it’s probably the case.”

The woman said her stepdaughter had a history of inviting them over and skipping out, for days sometimes, to trick them into watching her kids. Although they had plans to attend the wedding, the bride’s father had an intense dental surgery a month ago and when it didn’t work, his doctor said he would need another.

“We come to find out the surgery wasn’t effective and my husband needs to schedule another operation,” the stepmothers said. “The date now: 2 weeks before the wedding. I pressed for my husband to take it because of the agony he’s in. We were both heartbroken when we called our daughter to explain the situation. I knew my husband wouldn’t be suitable for the drive, in both his condition and with the pandemic. He also wouldn’t be able to handle three kids in a small apartment.”

She explained that they couldn’t afford to pay for a babysitter because they paid for the operations out of pocket, the majority of the wedding, the wedding dress, florist, catering and paid the daughter’s rent.

“I expected her to be hurt/angry, but not unhinged. A good solid 5 minutes — him and I are getting called every name in the book,” she explained. “She goes on to say I plotted her dad against him and I hate her and did this purposely to ruin her wedding since no one else is willing to watch the little ones, now it will be her new husband’s job. Are we the a******?”

Reddit certainly didn’t think this stepmother was being wicked.

“It’s an unfortunate situation but… Your husband should suffer from medical issue for weeks just so you two could go babysit? And if he is in pain, how the heck he suppose to babysit three small kids?” one user wrote.

“We’re in a pandemic and having a 100+ person wedding and whining when your elderly parents don’t want to come due to health concerns is incredibly selfish,” another said.

“If she can afford a wedding during a pandemic, she can afford a babysitter,” someone commented.
