Steve Cooper will treat Facundo Buonanotte as if he’s a permanent Leicester City player – even if a transfer never materialises.

The manager says the Brighton loanee has fully committed himself to City and is not showing off his talents to solely benefit his own career. He’s doing it for the team too.

As one of City’s best performers so far this season, and given he’s still only 19 and so has great scope to improve, many supporters will be hoping Buonanotte's time at the club does not end when his loan deal expires next summer. But asked about a future transfer for the Argentinian, Cooper seemed to imply it will be one year and done.

Brighton initially indicated they were only sending Buonanotte out to get experience, rather than with an eye to a sale. They’re still keeping close tabs on his development and it’s understood their loans manager Gordon Greer visited City’s training ground this week to check on his progress.

“That’s not for me to get involved in too much,” Cooper said at his press conference when asked about the possibility of a transfer for the attacking midfielder. “While he’s here, we treat him like he’s our own. We give him everything. We’ve got a good relationship with Brighton in terms of communication, which is important. Let’s all benefit from his time here.

“We’ve been really impressed. The highlights of his game have been shown quite often. You can see the obvious abilities. First and foremost, he’s a really good lad. He’s really settled in here. He’s really down to earth and he’s bought into the dressing room and also what we’re asking of him in terms of how we want him to play, while giving him the freedom.

“He’s got a really good training ethic, he’s aggressive in his own way in terms of wanting to win. That adds to his football personality and the ability you see. We’re enjoying working with him, we really enjoy pushing him and trying to get the best out of him.

“And it’s good we see him doing it in a way that’s good for the team and the club. Every Premier League team has talented players and players who can make a difference at the top end of the pitch, but when they’re doing it for the team and falling into line with our intentions, that’s really pleasing. We’re really enjoying him as a footballer but we’re only 10 games in so we need to make sure we work hard with him to help him progress.”

Buonanotte has five goal contributions in a City shirt so far and he will hope to add to that at Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, when he will be expected to start. He will have to be on his best behaviour at Old Trafford though as he is just one yellow card away from a suspension.
