Brighton vs Crystal Palace - LIVE!

A late Joachim Andersen own goal denied Crystal Palace what would have been the ultimate smash-and-grab win away at bitter rivals Brighton an Hove Albion on Friday night.

As is often case for the home side, they dominated the game in almost every way imaginable but struggled to put the ball in the back of the net.

A dramatic few minutes in the first-half saw Pascal Gross miss a penalty before Neal Maupay bundled in from a corner just seconds after, although VAR ruled that out for a foul on the excellent Jack Butland.

When Conor Gallagher smashed one in from point-blank range after 70 minutes, the home side must have feared the worst. Despite dominating, a goal proved as elusive as ever.

Still, excellent work from Maupay caused Andersen to put through his own net with minutes remaining.

This fixture never disappoints.

Thank you for joining Standard Sport’s LIVE coverage of Crystal Palace’s draw with Brighton on Friday night.

As dramatic an affair as ever, you can read our full match report here.

FT: Brighton 1-1 Crystal Palace

21:57 , Jonathan Gorrie

Dramatic as usual between these two rivals.

Palace, you feel, are very luck to get away with that.

CHANCE FOR BRIGHTON

21:54 , Jonathan Gorrie

92:00 - Welbeck SO close to putting Brighton ahead.

His glanced header sails just over Butland. This game never disappoints.

A look at Brighton’s goal

21:53 , Jonathan Gorrie

GOAL: Brighton 1-1 Crystal Palace | Joachim Andersen ‘86

21:48 , Jonathan Gorrie

86:00 - Brilliant work from Maupay to create space in the box and his driven cross is deflected in by Joachim Andersen.

Speaking of late drama...

21:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

Familiar pattern

21:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

80:00 - All Brighton again but surely Palace will start to take heart from the fact they’re yet to score.

Still, this game is famous for its late drama.

Jack Rosser on Crystal Palace’s goal

21:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

For all the talk of a new Crystal Palace, this will be vintage Roy Hodgson if Palace pull this off. They’ve hardly had a look in all night and then pop up with that. Some fine work from Joel Ward early in that move.

GOAL: Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace | Conor Gallagher ‘69

21:32 , Jonathan Gorrie

69:00 - You couldn’t write it.

Brighton dominate but some nice play from Palace has Gallagher free in the box as the ball breaks and the midfielder smashes home.

The away end erupts.

Double change for Palace

21:27 , Jonathan Gorrie

Brighton in control

21:26 , Jonathan Gorrie

64:00 - Home fans no throwing out the ‘Ole’s’, such has been their teams’ dominance.

Still, it’s the old problem for Graham Potter’s side, they cannot score.

Hughes booked

21:22 , Jonathan Gorrie

60:00 - In real time, Will Hughes’ foul on Mac Allister looked an awful lot worse than it was.

While Jamie Carragher was hinting at a red, the former Watford man is only booked.

Injury problem for Brighton but more issues for Palace

21:16 , Jonathan Gorrie

Patrick Vieira breaks a record

21:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

Vieira booked.

Has now been shown a yellow card in four different decades in English football.

Pleasing read for Palace fans

21:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

CHANCE FOR BRIGHTON

21:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

49:00 - Brilliant stuff from Brighton sets Moder through one on one but Butland saves well.

Jack Rosser’s analysis on a chance for Crystal Palace

21:09 , Jonathan Gorrie

Finally a sprinkling of what Palace can offer - all after that scare from Moder. Olise with some brilliant work in the build up. Vieira will be hoping the young winger can inspire those around him in this second half.

CHANCE FOR BRIGHTON

21:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

46:00 - Moder hits the bar after a cross from the byline.

Palace living dangerously.

Trossard in behind early on

21:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

46:00 - Brighton starting the half well by pinning Palace back in their own box.

What else is new?

Back underway!

21:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

Surely Palace can only improve from here. No changes at the break.

Palace building for the future

20:52 , Jonathan Gorrie

And what a time to do it

20:52 , Jonathan Gorrie

Jack Rosser’s half-time verdict

20:51 , Jonathan Gorrie

Palace are fortunate to come through that first half unscathed. There were brief spells late on that will give them some encouragement but they need to step it up after the break.

HT: Brighton 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

Somehow, Palace head into the break on level terms.

A lookback at the crazy few minutes

20:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

Jack Rosser on a crazy few minutes

20:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

What a few minutes after a rather steady spell in the game. Jack Butland is having some first half. He spared Joel Ward after his mistake earlier and then comes up with a penalty save. That goal was rightfully ruled out too. Some way to bounce back from his mistake at Millwall.

DISALLOWED

20:41 , Jonathan Gorrie

The drama continues, Maupay’s goal ruled out for a foul on Butland.

GOAL: Brighton 1-0 Crystal Palace | Neal Maupay ‘38

20:41 , Jonathan Gorrie

38:00 - Maupay taps in after a corner but VAR are checking. Could be ruled out.

SAVED!

20:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

Butland saves it.

PENALTY TO BRIGHTON!

20:39 , Jonathan Gorrie

Awarded. Gross to take.

Penalty claim

20:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

VAR checking a potential foul in the box. Could be a penalty for Brighton.

CHANCE FOR BRIGHTON

20:36 , Jonathan Gorrie

34:00 - Moder can’t quite direct his volley at Butland after a goalmouth scramble.

Not pretty so far.

A photo to sum up Palace’s performance so far...

Signs of life for Palace?

20:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

31:00 - Given Brighton’s famed struggles in front of goal, perhaps Palace can take heart from the fact they’ve not conceded yet.

Perhaps it could be another smash and grab...

Palace living dangerously

20:30 , Jonathan Gorrie

27:00 - Something needs to change.

All Brighton so far, having dominated the middle of the park all evening. With Milivojevic on the bench, he could be worth turning to.

Jack Rosser’s analysis

20:24 , Jonathan Gorrie

Palace need to get a grip in midfield here. They’ve had the odd flash through Olise but Brighton are in full control and edging closer to an opener. Every time Palace clear the ball is coming back and we’ve seen very little of Gallagher so far.

CHANCE FOR BRIGHTON

20:22 , Jonathan Gorrie

19:00 - Moder can’t quite find a teammate from a byline after some brilliant intricate passing between Lallana and Mac Allister.

WHAT A BALL FROM OLISE

20:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

18:00 - The youngster has switched side’s with Eze and put a wonderful ball into the box for Edouard, who is slightly offside.

When he’s on the ball, things happen.

Wasted cross from Mithchell

20:19 , Jonathan Gorrie

16:00 - Some good build-up play from Palace but Mitchell’s cross from the left is utterly wasted.

Missed everybody.

Heating up nicely

20:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

14:00 - Palace, to their credit, have looked dangerous.

Brighton might have had the better of it thus far but there’s been a few times the away side have looked to get in-behind.

Eze looks somewhat rusty which, of course, is understandable.

Brighton appear to notice a weakness

20:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

12:00 - Every time Brighton have the ball, they want to find Moder to run at Tyrek Mitchell.

Seems to be a tactic for the home side.

Jack Rosser’s analysis

20:13 , Jonathan Gorrie

This is a chance for Palace to show how far they’ve come under Patrick Vieira but they’ve had very little time and space to do so to this point. Brighton are trying to exploit Palace’s high line and nearly make it work thanks to that mistake from Ward. Butland doing well to spare the right-back’s blushes.

CHANCE FOR BRIGHTON

20:13 , Jonathan Gorrie

09:00 - Butland has just bailed Palace out.

A loose header from Joel Ward sets Trossard free into a 1v1 with the Palace stopper.

Butland, who was at fault away at Millwall in the FA Cup, spares Ward’s blushes.

Palace need to break the game up

20:10 , Jonathan Gorrie

07:00 - Not many teams are going to be able to out play Brighton at home.

What Palace need to do is break the game up a bit, potentially hitting them on the counter. Allowing Brighton to pass the ball about is a risky tactic.

Palace struggling to settle

20:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

05:00 - Lallana and Trossard helping Brighton keep the ball in dangerous areas.

Palace struggling to get out of their own 18-yard box. Need to see this out.

Great work from Lallana

20:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

03:00 - Lallana with a give and go to Mac Allister but can’t quite slip in Maupay.

Palace need to avoid him getting on the ball in dangerous areas.

Nice pressure from Gallagher

20:05 , Jonathan Gorrie

02:00 - You can see why fans adore Conor Gallagher.

The man has just run from his own half pretty much to press Brighton’s central defenders and goalkeeper early on.

Palace with some early pressure

20:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

01:00 - Few early throw ins on the left for Palace, pinning Brighton back somewhat.

Malik Ouzia’s feature on a new-look Crystal Palace

19:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

“Only twelve months ago, the thought of a Crystal Palace teamsheet without Wilfried Zaha on it would’ve caused sleepless nights for most Eagles fans and drawn yawns from many neutrals.

“Going into last February’s derby meeting with Brighton, you could not move for mentions of the fact that Roy Hodgson’s team had lost 18 of their previous 20 league games without the winger and, most damningly, failed to even score in all but four of them.

“Forget about taking a knife to a gun fight, so cautious and blunt were Palace without their talisman, it often felt like they were turning up with little more than a cardboard shield and a rolling pin.”

Your Evening Standard prediction

18:29 , Jonathan Gorrie

Palace have tended to score more goals since the two sides met in September but have been somewhat leaky in defence. For that reason, perhaps we can expect somewhat of a thriller.

2-2 draw.

Early Crystal Palace team news

18:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

Palace will be missing Jordan Ayew, Wilfried Zaha and Cheikhou Kouyate due to the AFCON but Conor Gallagher is available in the Premier League once more.

Having impressed in the FA Cup, Michael Olise could be in the XI, too. James McArthur and James Tomkins are both out, but Vicente Guaita should play.
