Midfielder Tommy Backwell has joined Cheltenham Town on a permanent basis after a brief loan spell from Bristol City.

The 21-year-old scored on his full EFL debut to help the Robins defeat Salford City in League Two and he has made a total of four appearances for Michael Flynn's side.

Backwell, who has spent time on loan at Hallen, Yate Town and Bath City, has been playing in an advanced central role in support of the centre forward, filling the gap left by leading scorer Joel Colwill.

Backwell spent time training with Cheltenham in early January, impressing enough to earn a loan switch from his Championship parent club and Flynn has seen enough to now offer him an 18-month contract.

Backwell will be joined at the EV Charger Points Stadium on transfer deadline day by midfielder Timothée Dieng, who has arrived on loan from Gillingham until the end of the season.
