BOLTON Wanderers' game at Bristol Rovers has been postponed because of safety concerns at the Memorial Stadium.

The home club conducted a safety inspection at 7.30am after heavy overnight storms and high winds to assess whether the game could safely go ahead.

The area is currently subject to a life-threatening red weather warning, which was set to continue for the rest of the morning, at least.

Storm Darragh has brought damaging winds of up to 90mph, and games at Plymouth, Cardiff and Newport County had already been called off well in advance.

Hundreds of Wanderers fans had been planning to make the trip with coaches setting off from the North West early in the morning. But with travel conditions also treacherous on the roads, the decision has been taken to postpone the fixture.

A statement from the home club read: "Bristol Rovers FC can confirm today's Sky Bet League One fixture against Bolton Wanderers has been postponed.

"While the club had been hopeful of proceeding with today's fixture as planned, worsening conditions overnight caused by Storm Darragh have brought an increased, significant threat to the safety of all due to attend The Memorial Stadium, as highlighted by repeated emergency alerts from the UK Government.

"Therefore in consultation and agreement with the EFL, local safety advisory group and Bolton Wanderers FC, today's game has been postponed for safety reasons.

"A new date for the rearranged fixture will be confirmed in due course."
