Brook Hill Guard Soccer wins first state championship in school history

Mar. 9—ROUND ROCK — Brook Hill defeated Houston-British International School, 1-0, Friday, which gave the Guard its first state championship in school history.

Shooting a direct kick, Mio Engqvist angled the ball with precision around the British International wall, with the shot beating the keeper to his far side, for what turned out to be the only goal of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools' Division Iii Winter Soccer title match.

Engqvist, a senior, who is in his third season of Guard Soccer, joined teammates Christian Pous, a junior goalkeeper, midfielder/defender Marlon Rataj, a senior, and sophomore-defender Javier Gavito as All-Tournament team selections from Brook Hill.

Brook Hill head boy's soccer coach David Collins said in an interview done for Brook Hill Athletics that he had a great group of guys who went out every match and got the job done. He added that the team was a cohesive unity, with a strong bond, who enjoyed playing together very much and the results of that unity showed on the pitch.

The TAPPS Division III state tourney was held at the Round Rock Multi Purpose Complex, Field 1.
