Celtic skipper Scott Brown would "definitely" like to see Steven Fletcher rejoin him in the Scotland set-up.

The Wolves striker was again conspicuous by his absence in the squad named on Monday by Craig Levein for next week's friendly in Slovenia. Fletcher remains in exile after informing the Scottish Football Association last February that he did not want to be considered for selection for the friendly against Northern Ireland.

Brown played with Fletcher at Hibernian and when asked if he would like to see his former Easter Road team mate back in the international fold, he said: "Yes, definitely, but it is out of my hands. It is up to Steven and the gaffer but it would definitely be good if he could get back in the squad."

He added: "I flip on the television every week and he seems to be scoring goals and celebrating.

"Everyone knew he could do it at Hibs, maybe a few people doubted him going down to England but I knew he definitely had it in him."

Levein re-ignited a regular debate by naming another English-born player in his squad, Blackpool striker Matt Phillips who qualifies through the grandparent rule.

However, Brown does not belong to the camp which believes players have to be born in Scotland to wear the dark blue.

"That would be naive to be perfectly honest," he said.

"We are not a big nation and we have not got a lot of players but we definitely have a good bunch of lads coming through.

"The better players we can get in the squad the better the depth."
