Bruno Guimaraes' unheard screams at Palace as Newcastle United chief visits dressing room

Bruno Guimaraes screamed into the plummeting winter air at Selhurst Park and swung his fists in anger after Crystal Palace's 94th minute equaliser.

The Brazil international's fellow countryman Joelinton had screamed in joy moments earlier after believing his clearance into the main stand at Palace had proved enough to steal the points. But Bruno was then caught ball watching as Marc Guehi's delicate cross floated over his head and picked out Daniel Munoz at the back post to ram home the equaliser.

As Guimaraes watched on helplessly when Munoz netted late on, he then sunk to the turf in sheer devastation. When he eventually got back on his feet he walked towards the centre circle and punched the air in sheer frustration. His screams looked like they'd fallen on deaf ears as many of his team-mates also sunk to the turf looking inconsolable.

Having failed to hold on to a vital lead, this was tough justice on the Magpies but arguably they proved to be architects of their own downfall as they failed to conjure up a single shot on target. Newcastle now face a stiff test against Liverpool at St James' Park in midweek and don't go into the game on high spirits.

Paul Mitchell dressing room visit sees sporting director sympathise with Howe's team

After the game, Newcastle's sporting director Paul Mitchell and performance chief James Bunce made their way from the executive seats to the dressing room area. However, this was a case of Newcastle being united across the backroom with Mitchell believed to have sympathised with the team after almost holding out for three points.

Mitchell described Howe as an "elite manager" at a recent fan talk in and he will be there to help him - somehow - in the January transfer window. In his post-game Press conference, Howe basically said it will be impossible to sign a proven Premier League striker with the funds available.

Newcastle remain in 10th place in the Premier League and look some distance off the Champions League spots. But they may be getting to a challenging position gradually, on the field and in the transfer market. In both fields they need to be more creative it seems.

Newcastle players jeered off in moment Eddie Howe may not complain about

The boisterous Palace fans were on the backs of Newcastle players early in this game as the likes of Joelinton and Joe Willock went down for treatment. Howe has stated before he does not want his team to be "popular" and would rather "compete".

He at least got the second part of that wish at Palace on Saturday night. Newcastle did indeed compete without holding on. Unsurprisingly, the game delays were considered gamesmanship from Palace fans and as the Magpies made their way down the tunnel at the end they were booed and jeered.

Could this be a sign of the Newcastle side from 2023 returning slowly? Or is that wishful thinking and the problems are deeper than we think?
