A 3-1 win at home put Markus Gisdol’s side well on their way last week, and goals from defenders David Abraham and Jannik Vestergaard saw them confirm their place in the top flight.

Former Schalke and Germany U21 midfielder Alexander Baumjohann had levelled for FCK on the night.

Hoffenheim are a tiny provincial club from a village of 3,000 people but were catapulted into the Bundesliga by software billionaire Dietmar Hopp, a former player who co-founded the SAP empire.

But they have struggled in the past two seasons, finishing 16th in the 18-team top flight, meaning they had to enter a two-legged play-off against the third-placed side from the second tier.
