The Germany Under-21 international has suffered with bursitis in the right arm joint for some time, according to his club, a situation which worsened during the 2-1 Bundesliga win at Bayern Munich at the weekend.

Joint coach Sami Hyypia says Leno is now a definite absentee when fifth-placed Leverkusen visit Arminia Bielefeld of the third division in the German Cup on Wednesday, and the 20-year-old’s return date is uncertain.

"He's definitely out against Bielefeld,” said Hyypia. “We'll see after that."

Leverkusen will also be without forward Karim Bellarabi for the cup tie due to a groin injury.
