Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February, but is now cancer-free after undergoing treatment.

Ripken, 59, revealed that news Thursday. He said the cancer was detected early when he went to a urologist as a precaution.

The cancer was contained in Ripken’s prostate, and he had surgery in March. Ripken said he is fully recovered and cancer-free now. He added that “it’s been a pretty miraculous few months.”

Cal Ripken Jr. wants to bring awareness with his story

Ripken said he believed he could bring awareness to the importance of early detection by sharing his story. He stressed the importance of going in for yearly physicals, and encouraged others to go to a doctor and get checked.

Cal Ripken Jr. hasn’t spoken with Trey Mancini yet

Ripken said he hadn’t talked to Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini yet. Mancini revealed he had a malignant tumor removed from his colon in March. Mancini, 28, is undergoing chemotherapy, and will not play during the 2020 MLB season.

Ripken was diagnosed around the same time as Mancini, but the two haven’t spoke yet. Ripken said he wasn’t vocal about his diagnosis initially, but is ready to talk about it now.

Ripken added he would be open to speaking with Mancini about his experience.
