Callum Wilson and Eddie Howe in agreement after controversial Newcastle United incident
As Newcastle United chased the game at 2-0 down on Monday evening, there was a small glimmer of hope as Jacob Murphy swung a hopeful cross in from the right. Callum Wilson was the intended target in the middle but the Magpies' forward was soon on the ground after a tangle with West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Wilson, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and the entire Leazes End appealed for a penalty, as referee Craig Pawson waved play on. The game's Video Assistant Referee felt the same, refusing to even send the man in the middle to the pitchside monitor for a second look.
Explaining the decision via their official Match Centre account, the Premier League wrote on X: “The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge by Mavropanos on Wilson was checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming that the contact was not sufficient for a penalty.”

Wilson was quizzed on the incident after making his first appearance of the season, with the returning forward admitting he felt, in real time, as though the spot-kick should have been awarded.
“When it’s happening so fast and in the heat of the moment, the cross is coming in and you feel like you’re about to head it and all of a sudden you find yourself on the floor, there is only one reason why that can happen and it’s probably a push in the back," he said.
“I’ll have to watch it back but I can’t hold my ground once I’m in the air because you’re off the floor. A little frustrated not to get given that but I’ll watch it back, review it.”
Those sentiments were shared by Howe, with the Newcastle chief believing, both after seeing the contact in real time and in one replay, that Wilson should have won the penalty.
He said: “Yeah I possibly do [think it was a penalty]. It’s difficult for me to say. I’ve looked at it once and I haven’t seen it again. When I looked at it live I felt it was a really good shout for a penalty, someone might tell me different but I thought it was a good chance.”
