Signing former Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo would always be “a good idea” for Chelsea, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Portugal international is currently a free agent after the Red Devils mutually agreed to terminate his contract at Old Trafford following his controversial interview with Piers Morgan.
Both parties agreed there was no way back for the striker at Man Utd after he criticised the club, manager, senior executives and former players in a 90-minute chat with Morgan.
A report yesterday insisted that Ronaldo had now agreed a huge deal to join Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr on January 1 with the former Real Madrid striker set to net a whopping €500m over two-and-a-half years.
But the Daily Mail reported that sources close to Ronaldo have called that ‘nonsense’ with the Portugal legend yet to decide his future.
And transfer expert Romano doubles down on that by claiming Ronaldo’s team “still hope to find a solution in Europe” despite the offer from Al Nassr.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is 100% focused on the World Cup, right after he will decide on his future,” Romano told Caught Offside.
“Al Nassr’s bid is official and concrete, they are pushing and they want Ronaldo so that’s why they have a chance. Of course on Ronaldo’s side they still hope to find a solution in Europe, the market can change in five minutes for a free agent.
“On Chelsea, I think Cristiano is always a good idea, he could give them a goal threat and great experience and winning mentality, but their project is more about young players right now.”
There haven’t been any concrete reports suggesting that Arsenal want to sign Ronaldo on a free transfer but that hasn’t stopped suggestions he could join on social media.
News of Gabriel Jesus’ injury at the World Cup, which could keep him out for up to three months, has led to discussion of bringing in Ronaldo on a possible short-term deal.
But former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell thinks the suggestions will be falling on deaf ears at the Emirates Stadium with no chance of the Gunners signing Ronaldo.
Campbell said: “It’s not happening. It’s never going to happen in a month of Sundays.
“We just got rid of a lot of these guys who are going to cause problems, that’s not going to happen.”
