The Saturday game between the Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals was delayed for 12 minutes in the first period because of a hole in the boards behind a goal net

The hole was discovered with 14:44 left in the frame and after it was seen, referees eventually determined that the boards needed to be repaired.

Such situations in NHL games are rare, but memorable. In 2015 a shot by Ottawa Senators defenseman Cody Ceci against the Chicago Blackhawks opened a hole in the bottom part of the boards at Canadian Tire Centre. This took 10-15 minutes to fix.
