Boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez has apologised to Lionel Messi after threatening to “find” him in the aftermath of Argentina’s win over Mexico last week.
The Albicelestes beat Mexico 2-0 on Saturday with Messi scoring a brilliant opening goal to send Argentina on their way to three crucial points.
Argentina secured their place in the knockout rounds of the World Cup on Wednesday as they finished top of Group C by comfortably beating Poland 2-0.
Messi and his Argentina team-mates were seen celebrating in the dressing room after their victory over Mexico with a video angering El Tri supporters.
The footage showed a Mexico shirt on the floor in front of Messi before the Argentina forward caught the shirt with his foot as he kicked off his boots.
And Canelo was far from happy after seeing the video, calling Messi’s actions “bullsh*t” and claiming the Paris Saint-Germain forward “better pray to God that I don’t find him”.
“Did you guys see Messi cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag,” Canelo wrote on Twitter.
“He better pray to God that I don’t find him.
“Just as I respect Argentina, you have to respect Mexico! I’m not talking about the country, I’m talking about Messi because of the bullsh*t he did.
“Since the Mexico shirt is on the ground, it’s already an insult. Stop bullsh*ting about what was or wasn’t.”
Messi was not the only one to face abuse from Canelo with Manchester City and Argentina legend Segio Aguero defending his compatriot.
In defence of Messi, Aguero wrote on Twitter: “Mr. Canelo, don’t look for excuses or problems, surely you don’t know about soccer and what happens in a locker room. The shirts are always on the floor after the games are over due to sweat and then if you see well, he makes the movement to remove the booty and accidentally hits it.”
To which Canelo replied: “You bastard too… you wrote to me oh oh canelo and now sucking don’t be a hypocrite bastard.”
But now Canelo – who has won multiple world championship fights in four weight classes – has issued an apology for his behaviour over the “last few days”.
Canelo wrote: “These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologize to Messi and the people of Argentina. Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn.
“I wish both teams much success in their matches today and here we will continue supporting Mexico until the end.”
