Canucks' Alex Edler ejected for dangerous knee-on-knee hit on Zach Hyman

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler was ejected from Sunday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs after delivering a dangerous hit on forward Zach Hyman.

The knee-on-knee collision occurred during the second period of the contest. Following a video review, the officials assessed Edler a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Hyman hobbled into the Maple Leafs’ dressing room once he left the ice, did not return, and was subsequently ruled out before the start of the third period. It's the same knee Hyman had surgically repaired in 2019.

Edler was tossed in the Canucks’ first game since March 24. The team has spent the last three-plus weeks recovering from a COVID-19 outbreak that affected more than 20 members of the organization.

Due to the number of postponed games Vancouver piled up while recovering, its season has been extended to May 19. Starting on Sunday, the Canucks will play 19 games in 32 days.
