Carlo Ancelotti believes he was written off as being ‘too old’ for top level football management after he left Everton.

The former Blues boss made a shock switch back to Real Madrid in the June of 2021 after 18 months at Goodison Park.

The move followed one of the most interesting spells of the Farhad Moshiri era with Ancelotti signing high profile players including James Rodriguez and spending big on the likes of Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

His Covid-hit tenure had Everton fighting at the top of the Premier League table over the Christmas of 2020 before a disappointing close to the only full campaign he oversaw led to a 10th-placed finish.

With his spell on Merseyside having followed a difficult stint at Napoli, his return to Madrid, which he had led to the Champions League in 2014, was widely viewed with surprise.

It has proved to be an inspired move, with Ancelotti having since secured two more Champions League wins alongside two La Liga titles and other trophies.

Ancelotti, who was 61 when he ended his stay at Everton prematurely, has hinted at a belief he was written off when that deal emerged due to his age.

Reflecting on his return he recently told La Voz de Galicia, via Sport Witness: “Real is Real, what could be better? Here there is a respect for history, all the footballers of the past are present in the photographs of the Ciudad Deportiva. I maintain the passion, this is how I live the game, my work, I have always carried this balance with me. I have overcome moments that are not always positive, after my experience with Everton I was off the radar, they thought I was old. In Naples the same thing.”
