Carlos Sainz wants to go one step better this weekend as he prepares for one of his favourite tracks as a Ferrari driver, the Monaco Grand Prix

In his two races for the Maranello outfit in Monaco, Sainz has finished P2 making it one of his more favoured circuits in the F1 calendar. Even before he made the move to Ferrari, it was a place where he always seems to do well at having so far never finished outside of the points during McLaren, Renault and Toro Rosso stints.

Having twice finished runner-up, Sainz is now looking to go one better this weekend and secure the second Formula 1 win of his career.

Speaking to F1.com, Sainz said the Monte Carlo circuit was one he “always loved” being at.

“I always love being here,” the Spaniard said. “Two times, P2. I think it’s time to go and try to get P1 and if not, a podium this year would be also good.”

Sainz’s first year with Ferrari in 2021 saw him finish behind Max Verstappen having watched team-mate Charles Leclerc fail to take to the track following a crash in qualifying. Last year, he again benefited from Leclerc’s misfortune as Ferrari’s botched pit stop strategy for the home driver allowed both Sainz and Sergio Perez to overtake Leclerc.

Sainz faces a tough task this year to keep the run alive having so far failed to finish in the top three. The 28-year-old acknowledged that it is potentially a track that would suit Ferrari but was also quick to point out he expected Championship leaders Red Bull to also be strong.

“Independent of the track, Red Bull are still the favourites because it’s not like they’re slow,” he said.

“In the slow speed, I would say they are as quick as us and also over the kerbs and bumps, they are good everywhere. So I think they are still the favourites but I do feel like this weekend, if we can put everything together there’s maybe a little bit more progress.”

Sainz’s participation in this weekend’s race was put in doubt after an image emerged of his leg wrapped in bandage following a charity football game. The Ferrari man later confirmed it was just a precaution and he was fit to race.
